How should I clean or care for my Levi’s® garments?

For denim, it’s best to wash denim as little as possible—not only to prevent shrinking and fading, but also to conserve water and lessen the impact on the environment. Selvedge denim is woven on traditional narrow-width shuttle looms and produces a signature self-finished clean edge – and “self-edge” is where the name “selvedge” comes from. You can identify a pair of selvedge jeans by looking at the inside of the out seam. When you roll the pant leg, you’ll find this crisp strip with a stripe down the middle, and this artful and functional detail (it won’t unravel!) is what sets selvedge denim apart from the rest.

What is Dye Transfer?
If you have ever noticed dark dye rubbing off your jeans onto your bag, shoes, or even your hands — you are not alone. It happens most often with dark-wash and raw denim because these fabrics hold a lot of extra dye when they are made.
Dye transfer is completely normal, especially when your jeans are brand new. It is also common with indigo-dyed denim, which gives your jeans their rich, deep color.
What Causes Dye Transfer?
During the dyeing process, denim is saturated with color to get that perfect shade of blue, black, or gray. While some of that dye fully sets into the fabric, there is often a little extra dye left on the surface. As you wear your jeans, especially before the first few washes, some of that dye can rub off onto lighter fabrics and surfaces.
Common Items at Risk for Dye Transfer
To help you protect your stuff, here are the things most likely to pick up denim dye:

Yes. The blank Tab is a registered Levi Strauss & Co. trademark and is used on select products by design. Its presence does not indicate a defect, counterfeit, or irregular item.
